CHAPTER ONE

The shrill voice of the alarm woke up Nisha in the wee hours of Monday morning. She turned in her bed tossing and twisting not wanting to spoil her sleep. After turning off the alarm for the fourth time, she squeezed her eyes to adjust her eyesight and look up to her alarm clock. It was seven o’clock. It happened to her occasionally. She found it irritating to open her eyes to see clearly, after she shut her eyes for long hours. She did not have the perfect eyesight but her contact lenses aided her to see the things, which she wanted to see.
It was her first day of college. The day every collegian looks forward to. Nisha was no exception. She had intended to start the day by rising up early and deciding which costume would she fit into. All her plans were washed away when her sleep took over. She always had trouble in getting up early.
Sometimes, it made her think, “Why in the world did days have to start in mornings. Wouldn’t it be better if it were in noons”? Much to her day dreaming, she realized she was getting late.
Nisha was not a girl of speed but she was fast enough to get dressed before her bus arrived. She hurriedly rushed into the bathroom in her favorite pink three fourth pajamas. She would not sleep in anything else if it were not for her pajamas. She brushed hard to make her off-white yellowish teeth look polished teeth but in vain. No amount of toothpaste was going to change that awful color of her teeth.
Having a quick bath, she wore on her new churidhar. Not that she did not wear jeans, but she wanted to get a look at the way people dressed in her college, which was why she choose a simple looking yellow outfit with black stripes. She neatly tied her light brown –blackish colored hair into a ponytail, which swayed side ways when she walked past the doors searching for her bag.
The climate was pleasant in Tirupur, a small city in Tamil Nadu. It was located in Southern India. Hailing originally from Gujarat, Nisha’s father shifted to south in search of a business and Tirupur had provided them with a gold mine. It was a land of cotton garments. It mainly supplied goods for the American market. The city experienced rain and summer to a tolerable extent.
Nisha’s mother was a woman of values. She was a short woman with fair complexion with few wrinkles on her forehead, which indicated years of experience and hard ships. Every mother loves her daughter and Nisha’s mum wanted her to be an engineer. Though Nisha had no interest in engineering, her mum did not impose her ambitions on her. Her mum was frank, easy going and much like Nisha’s friend.
Having done with her breakfast, which included a warm glass of milk with few pieces of biscuit, Nisha rushed off to catch her bus wishing her parents a quick good bye. Nisha felt butterflies in her stomach as she was waiting for the bus to college, which was one hour and ten minutes far from her place. She sat beside the window looking at the world go by.
Gosh! She thought aloud, “It’s my first day. God please make it go well”
Had God heard her prayers things would have been normal but Nisha had to be prepared for the worst that was awaiting her.

She reached the college at ten past nine, which meant she had twenty minutes to have a look around the campus. It was a five-minute walk from the entrance towards the main building. There were three large buildings, which covered the entire area. One block was the Commerce block, which comprised of the Commerce oriented courses. Besides the Commerce block, stood the IM block (International management block) which was for the students undergoing their postgraduate courses. It had black glass windows with the outside of the building painted in white, which was beginning to fade and was replaced by a dull yellowish color. Nisha passed by the IM block towards another large building, which was the Science block.
The science block was circular in structure comprised of four floors. It had classrooms, which were adjacent to each other. There must have been about twenty classrooms in the entire block. This block however, unlike the other two blocks had an entirely different look. It had the typical background of a college campus. The walls were painted fresh white in color with square shaped notice boards stuck on them at various places. On all the four corners of each floor, one could find the staff rooms, which were constructed department wise.
Nisha quickly made her way towards her classroom, which was on the left end of the second floor. She did not have much trouble in locating her classroom, as there was a large rectangular shaped notice board on which were stuck various colors of sheets each showing a different article. Some sheets contained the results of the previous semesters.
On one side were sheets, which contained the classroom numbers with the name of the particular course beside it. There were many freshers scrambling their way near the notice board to locate their classrooms behaving like kinder garden children fighting for chocolates. One fat guy with bright red colored hair, which stuck out in all directions, nearly knocked down Nisha, who ended up bruising her right elbow. She angrily searched for the person who pushed her so hardly but before she could see her culprit, the boy had disappeared from the scene. Her eyes quickly fell on her course name, which was BCA (Bachelors in Computer Applications) opposite to the number 302.
At fifteen minutes past nine, Nisha entered the classroom, which was probably the most darkest room in the entire area. She felt as though she had entered a dungeon. The room was spacious, large enough to occupy a population of sixty students. It had windows on one side of the class, which gave a view of the IM block. Nisha entered quietly and occupied a seat in the last row, which was at the end of the class. She did not want to be in the front, in a way, she felt comforting to be behind and watch the fun-taking place. She turned her attention towards the inmates of the class.
She spotted two boys sitting at the other side of the class. One guy, who had the color of charcoal was busy gazing outside the window as though the campus had the most beautiful sceneries, though there were none. His hair was so untidy; it looked like it had not been washed since days. He was dressed in tight black pants, which did not even reach the tip of his legs, and a full sleeve brown shirt with its collar buttons stuck to his neck. Nisha wondered if his shirt would choke him to death, thankfully, he did not show signs of suffocation yet. She turned her attention towards the other guy who was wheatish in color and was normal looking. Much to her embarrassment, Nisha realized she had been caught staring by one of the guys.
Huh! Nothing much had happened yet. Nisha got bored of sight seeing the empty room with the company of dumb looking guys. She desperately waited for the crowd to enter as she was definitely looking forward to meet her fellow mates.
